Kohl

Kohl, produced by the mixture of lead sulfide and a few other ingredients, is an ancient eye cosmetic used by women. Kohl is used in place of mascara to highlight the eyelashes by the people of North Africa, Middle East, India and South Asia. It is commonly known as kajal, surma, kehal, kol etc. It has a history of being used from the ancient Egyptian queens. The belief that Kohl protects a person from eye ailments and from the harsh rays of the sun, forced Egyptians to use them. But the purpose of using it is different now-a-days. Indian mothers put Kohl in their infant’s eyes soon after birth to protect it from being cursed or for strengthening its eye sight.
